Longines - railwayman's watches, historical notes (taken from Watches Forumfree - Logines RM Mediterranean network):
We are in the early 1900s, in Europe and also in Italy the manufacturing companies were asked for ever more excellent quality and ever stricter standards such as for example that of having a bimetallic balance wheel in steel resistant to thermal shock, micrometric regulator of the balance spring and not to lose more than thirty seconds a week. Furthermore, the second hand was applied to the dial of the pocket watches, which indicated the correct functioning of the watch. The characteristic of some Italian pocket watches for train conductors was that of having an eyelet on the metal edge of the case which allowed to introduce a leaded wire to guarantee the closure of the dial and the back of the case. The traveling staff's watch "sealed" with a lead to avoid any tampering was only removed by the station master if the time did not correspond to the official one, this as a guarantee of respect and regularity of the timetable. After plumbing, no one could change the time, because these watches had the time reset by means of a "targette", a lever that had to be lifted to put the winding shaft in communication with the reset mechanism and then inside of the case. Synchronizing the train crew's clock with that of the station was a must at stops and if there were advances or delays with respect to the official time, adjustment was required in the movement offices before resuming travel.
